On Hadrian's doorway, made of Pentelican marble, (IInd century B.C), two inscriptions in Greek can be read ; facing the Acropolis : "Here lies Athens, the old city of Theseus"; and facing the Olympieion : "Here lies the city of Hadrian, and no longer that of Theseus". |
